But what we haven’t talked about lately is how to care for your fence after it is installed and the best ways to do so. Routine fence care is extremely important to avoid the inconvenience of fence fixing, to increase the life of your fence, and to help keep fence maintenance costs lower in the long run. As you know, Montana faces many harsh climates, wildlife, and other factors that can take a toll on your fence. At Montana Fence, we want to maximize the value of your fence and help with annual checkups and typical fence maintenance to avoid factors like wood rot, damage, rust, and more. Our team has come together to create a guide for fence maintenance based on the type of fence materials you are using. These tips and tricks can help your fence last longer and stay looking brand new.

Guide to Fence Maintenance for Every Material

Each fencing material is built for certain climates, serves different duties, and has some type of maintenance required. For more populated cities—like Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, and Kallispell—our professionals recommend fencing materials that are easier to clean and have less maintenance, like ornamental iron and chain link. Wood fence material is perfect for more rural and smaller towns around Montana (such as Three Forks, Shepard, and Big Fork) because it is durable but may require more color maintenance. Vinyl fence materials are great for areas that are both rural or populated since they are durable, easy to keep clean, and simple to install. Below, we’ll lay out the details of each fencing material, the maintenance involved, and our fencing tips for every fence type.

  Garden, Farm & Ranch Fence

There are many different fence materials that fall under the category of garden, farm, and ranch fencing: barb wire, horse fence, high tensile smooth wire, and more. Each material is meant to withstand harsh weather conditions, wildlife, and livestock. Below we have provided a few general maintenance tips for this category of fencing.

  Maintenance Tips

Annual Inspections : You will hear us say this multiple times throughout our blog—annual inspections are the best thing a homeowner can do to maintain their fence. Walk around the fence line. Take note of any loose or broken wires, bent or broken posts, stability of existing braces, and make sure all gates are operable. It’s impossible to have eyes constantly on your fence, but checking it annually will help gauge any work that may need to be done.

Stay Ahead of Repairs : When finding something in need of repair—big or small— we recommend fixing it right away. Repairs may include a fallen wire, cracked board, or wood rot. Fixing the problem immediately after finding it can prevent the damages from spiraling out of control.

  Wood

You can never go wrong with a wood fence. Wood fencing is cost-efficient, interchangeable in color, versatile in shape, and environmentally friendly. Although wood fencing may require restaining to maintain its color and may undergo rot (this is rare but possible), it is durable in a Montana climate. Here are a few simple tips to help your wood fence look fresh and stay sturdy over the years.

  Maintenance Tips

Point Sprinklers Away from Fencing – Water can be very damaging to wood and cause rotting and fading. Keeping sprinklers pointed away and any other water sources off your fence is a good way to lengthen the lifespan of your wood fence.

Clean Your Fence Every 2-3 Years – It is easy for dirt and debris to build up on a wooden fence, especially in rural Montana towns. Cleaning your fence with a wire brush, power washer, or oxygenated bleach will properly remove buildup and keep your fence looking new.

Don’t Wait to Fix a Problem – It is easy to put off minor issues, but this can cause a domino effect of problems in the future. By staying up on minor issues and fixing problems when they arise, you can boost your fence’s longevity and save time and money down the road.

  Vinyl

We love the look of a simple vinyl fence in any setting—the upkeep is easy and simple! Vinyl fences come in many different styles and colors and are known for their flexibility, strength, and low maintenance. Bonus, vinyl is a great material to outlast rain and snow in the winter/spring months of Montana.

  Maintenance Tips

Routinely Spray Your Vinyl Fence Off – As easy as this trick is, it is vastly overlooked. A quick spray down will keep your vinyl fence clean and prevent damage-causing buildup.

Clean with a Simple Green – This tip is one of our favorites. Using a Simple Green Spray works like a charm to keep vinyl clean. It really doesn’t take much to maintain the look of this fence. Even soapy water can be enough to clean vinyl fence. Soft Scrub is also a great option to get any scratches out of your white vinyl fence. Trust us on this one: your fence will stay shiny and look brand new!

Fix the problem right away – Vinyl fence can be quirky and issues are hard to find with annual inspections. In most instances when a problem occurs, such as a picket coming undone, it is easiest for a homeowner to have it repaired right away. Extreme weather can be a pressing issue for vinyl fence so keeping up on repairs in the winter months is very important.

  Ornamental Iron

Ornamental iron fencing is known for its durability, long-lasting material, and high security. But like any other type of fence, ornamental iron also needs maintenance—although, the maintenance is on the lower end of the spectrum compared to other fencing products.

  Maintenance Tips

Keep Up with Repairs – We may have mentioned this tip many times already, but it’s true! Keeping up on smaller repairs can prolong the life of your fence. A trick we love is to use a black acrylic-based paint from the manufacturer for any scratches that may come from installation or normal wear and tear. It’s safe to use on the coating and makes the fence look brand new!

  Chain Link

Chain link fencing is very similar to ornamental iron fencing—long-lasting and low maintenance. Simply spraying your fence with a hose can keep your fence looking brand new.

Avoid Growth of Plants and Trees – Vines, flowers, and sucker trees can displace your fence and cause damage by lifting and displacing links. There are many moving parts to consider when deciding what type of fence to build and how it should look to complement your style. We know this process can be a headache, so we compiled a list of factors that weigh into the decision of building a functional and aesthetic fence. Here are some tips to consider while choosing a fence that’s perfect for you:

Top 5 Things to Consider Before Building Your Fence

  Fence Material

Fencing material is one of the top considerations when deciding on the type and style of fence you want. Whether your fence protects your yard and adds security or adds backyard ambiance, we can help determine what material is right for you. Below are the fence materials that we provide at Montana Fence as well as the benefit of each product:

Chain Link Fence : This is an inexpensive fencing option known for high visibility, low maintenance, quick installation, high durability, and high security. Because of the visibility levels of chain link, flowers and gardens can access more sunlight, leaving your yard blooming and beautiful!

Ornamental Iron Fence : Like chain link fence, ornamental iron is durable, low maintenance, and has high security. Ornamental iron fence is known for its timeless elegance that adds to any home’s aesthetic.

Vinyl Fence : This fence is great for people looking to browse a variety of styles. Vinyl comes in many different styles compared to other materials and is known for being flexible, strong, and low maintenance. Vinyl material hits home with a white picket aesthetic fence that pairs with any property.

Wood Fence : Wood is a classic material with many benefits. Wood fence is cost-efficient, interchangeable when it comes to color, versatile in shape, and environmentally friendly. Wood fence is easy to pair with your home’s aesthetic with paint and stain.

Agricultural Fence : We classify agricultural fencing as garden, ranch, and farm fencing, and these types of fences come in a variety of materials, aesthetics, and functionality. From barbed wire to high-tensile to electric fencing, agricultural fencing has a wide range of uses. Before choosing an agricultural fence, first determine what your fencing needs are—such as keeping horses in or protecting your garden—then choose a fence that fits those requirements and has the aesthetic you like.

  Size

The next factor you need to look into is fence size. Size is pretty self-explanatory: the bigger the yard you have, the more fence you will need. Yard shape and perimeter will determine the size of your desired fence. Are you currently located in a subdivision or are you located on larger acreage outside of town? By looking at your current property lines, you will be able to determine the size and shape that is perfect for you. Using the perimeter of your yard, we can provide a free estimate for your desired fence based on the style and amount of fencing materials needed.

  Weather

As a Montana company, we know our state can bring a range of weather patterns, including rain, snow, wind, and hail. It is important to consider these factors when choosing a fence for your property. In Montana, choosing a fence that is durable in all climate conditions is critical. Changing weather can cause wood splitting, cracked material, or sinking if not installed correctly. At Montana Fence, all our products are fit for Montana weather conditions with proper installation.

  HOA Compliances

Another important factor to consider when deciding on a fence is your neighborhood HOA restrictions. HOA rules are set in place for safety, visibility issues, and neighborhood aesthetics. We recommend all homeowners get these guidelines from their HOA before shopping for a fence:

  Length and width of pickets

  Height requirements

Distance fence must be from the property line- this is referred to as a setback

  Fence material

  Mandatory approval and check-ins

Accent Piece through Color and Material

After considering the functional necessities, you want to consider how to add your own style to your fence to make your backyard stand out. We can do this by using the fence as an accent piece to your yard and home. Fence material and color can transform your current look and create the ambiance you’ve always wanted. We’re excited to work with you! There are a couple of things you can do to make sure your fence installation goes smoothly and you get exactly what you need. We give an approximate timeline of installation, but things like weather, unforeseen equipment issues, and sick days can alter that. We will make the call to get all PUBLIC utilities marked. When those lines are marked, that is the best indication that we are on our way within the next week. This is a great time to MARK SPRINKLER lines and heads as well as any private utilities. Also, make sure any property pins are clearly marked. This is especially important if you are installing a perimeter fence so that we can ensure you get as close to those property lines as possible. Out of respect for our installers, please pick up any dog poop, brush, or debris so that they can get to the fence line cleanly. The foreman of the project will also give you a call to let you know they are coming. It is extremely important that you are there to meet with them on the first day of the project only. This way we can confirm the exact locations of gates and fence lines. Give your local office a call if you have any questions!

So you’ve put down your deposit, YAY! When using this process, it is very important to dig post holes below the frost line (usually 24-36” depending on the area) and to bell out the bottom of the hole. Even with this strategy, the frost can eventually push the concrete footing out of the ground. This is also known as frost heave. One solution to this issue can be driving the posts! All farm fencing including t-post and wire, half round rail, and deer fencing have always been driven in Montana. We have installed this style of fencing for the homeowner and rancher along with the Montana Department of Transportation on hundreds of miles of highway fencing. We noticed that none of these fences had frost heave issues. When we began fencing in North Dakota for the Bakken oil boom, we discovered that most North Dakota fence contractors pounded their chain link fence posts. We followed their lead and began pounding chain link posts. We were amazed at the strength and integrity of the product as well as the lack of frost heave. Because of this, we’ve added this method to our repertoire for jobs with dirt, clay, and semi-rocky soil. Some major pluses include:

  1. No dirt to clean up

  2. Fewer damaged sprinkler lines

  3. Elimination of frost heave

  4. Faster Fence Installation – no wait time on concrete curing

  5. Lower cost without compromising product integrity

Sometimes concrete can still be the better option. In areas with loose soil, concrete is the most secure method of installation. It totally depends on the soil/ground quality to decide which method is best for your project. Consult an expert or get a free estimate and we will walk the property with you to help decide which way is best: post pounded vs. set in concrete.

The traditional method of setting chain link fence posts is to “set” in concrete. Wood itself has pores and the openness of these pores can determine how well the stain soaks into the material and in turn, how long that stain will last.

  First Stain:

Wood fresh from the mill is not ready for stain. The Mill saw and sanders cause the wood fibers to lay down and close all the pores in the wood grain hindering stain absorption. When staining wood you will want to wait for the wood to completely dry out and re-open those pores. Usually this takes about a calendar season. If the fence is installed in the spring, wait until fall to stain. This process can be artificially accelerated by pressure washing the wood and letting it dry completely multiple times; just make sure the water applied is pretty even. This is usually best done on a hot day to speed the process. (HOT TIP: angle your sprinkler heads away from your fence so you don’t wind up with irregular and premature weathering and sprinkler rings). Once the wood is dried, apply your choice of stain.

  Care and Maintenance:

A good quality stain can last multiple years on a fence. The water bead test is a good way to determine whether or not you need to re-stain. The test is as simple as a quick splash of water onto a small area of the wood. If the water is absorbed by the wood it is time to re-stain. If the water runs off and or forms a bead on the surface of the wood, then the sealant component of the stain is still good even if the stain’s color may have faded. When re-applying a stain make sure to pressure wash the wood until all of the dirt and old stain is off. Sometimes you will need a cleaner to help remove the stain. Once the wood is cleaned and dried fully you can start to apply a new stain.

Wood fences can last for decades if they’re well taken care of and that starts with a high-quality stain and/or sealant.Maintenance Tipsthumbnailmain imageUltimate Guide to Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fencing2024-04-23T11:10:48Z2024-04-23T11:10:48Z

We’re lucky to live in the Northwest. Whether it’s a small garden fence, a robust fence surrounding your entire farm, or a livestock enclosure on your ranch, we could write a guide about each kind of fencing. Each type of fencing in this category serves a different purpose and is constructed to fit your specific needs. Fencing products in this category can range from high-tensile field fences to treated wood rails and posts to electric fencing and more.

What are Examples of Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fencing?

There are many different examples of garden, farm, and ranch fencing. From high tensile wire to low carbon fencing, wooden or t-posts to electric fencing, and more, at Montana Fence, we carry a large selection of garden, farm, and ranch fencing products to choose from. Here we share a few examples of garden, farm, and ranch fencing products you may want to consider for your fencing project.

High-Tensile fencing is steel carbon wire that is stretched or rolled between fence posts. Because it has a higher carbon content, high-tensile fencing products are stronger, lighter, and longer lasting, which makes them good fences for livestock such as cattle. While low-carbon fencing, as its name suggests, contains less carbon content than high-tensile fencing. It is strong but also more supple.

Low-Carbon fencing is a good fencing solution if you need temporary fencing that you don’t mind if it stretches over time. Low-carbon fencing is good for surrounding your garden and protecting it from small animal pests. High-tensile or low-carbon wire can be stretched or rolled between either wooden or steel posts.

Wood Railing may also be used to connect between wooden posts because another type of ranch fencing is wood post fencing. It is used for shorter, more permanent boundary fences, fencing corners, and braces. However, if you don’t want to build your fencing with wood railings and posts, an alternative is t-posts.

T-Post fencing are steel posts that are used for temporary fencing over long distances connected by wire. T-posts are also durable and easy to install.

Electric fence is made of plastic strands that are embedded with metal wires. It can also be made of galvanized steel and aluminum. Electric fencing is used to contain a wide variety of livestock. It can also be used as temporary fencing when rotating grazing of your livestock or even be used to set up bear barriers for when you camp in the wilderness.

Benefits of Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fencing and Gates

Garden, farm, and ranch fencing and gates come in a wide variety of materials, styles, and sizes, so the benefits vary depending on the type of fencing you use. However, no matter what your fencing project is, there are several advantages that are common for this category of fencing:

Aesthetic Appeal – The most obvious benefit of this type of fencing is that it enhances the look and appeal of your property. Farm and ranch fencing adds character to the landscape around your home and distinguishes your estate from your neighbor’s. Garden fencing can be an integral part of the outdoor design of your property, not only protecting your vegetables, but also enhancing the beauty of your space.

Livestock & Wildlife – Farm and ranch fencing isn’t all about the aesthetics. It has a job to do. One of the most essential functions of this fencing is livestock management. It keeps livestock confined while keeping harmful predators out. In addition to keeping livestock safe, farm and ranch fencing prevents livestock from wandering off, grazing in other pastures, or polluting water sources. Garden fencing is also excellent for keeping animals away. It helps keep your garden vegetables, fruit trees, and flower patches safe from nibbling wildlife.

Establishes Boundaries – Farm and ranch fencing helps to clearly define the borders of your land. It acts as a visual distinction between your property and your neighbor’s. It can also help with land management by dividing your property into sections—areas can be fenced for livestock, pasture, or crops. Garden fencing is great for establishing perimeters around your vegetable patch. It also separates your yard space from your garden space.

Disadvantages of Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fencing and Gates

While there are many advantages, different types of garden, farm, and ranch fencing products serve different purposes and, therefore, have varying drawbacks. Before you choose any type of fencing, consult with one of our fencing experts. We offer free estimates and can help you make the right decision for your fencing needs.

High Initial Investment – The upfront costs of building a garden, farm, or ranch fence can be a drawback. Costs can scale quickly if you have a lot of area to fence in. It tends to be the cheapest in material “cost per foot” but with the larger amount of fencing that usually is done in this style, that can end up being a higher initial cost. However, in the long run, a well-maintained garden, farm, or ranch fence can last years and add enhanced value to your property. This makes the initial investment pay for itself over time.

Termites & Untreated Wood – Specific to wood fencing, if you purchase wood posts that have not been treated to be in contact with soil, they may eventually rot and not support the weight of the fence. They can also be susceptible to termite damage. On the other hand, untreated wood has a natural look and is good for gardens or indoor use. At Montana Fence, we sell both treated and untreated wooden posts and rails.

Maintenance & Weather Damage – Garden, farm, and ranch fencing require regular maintenance to ensure they will stand the test of time. Harsh conditions such as extreme weather can be damaging to your fencing, so it is important to regularly check your fence for any deterioration. It’s a good idea to annually inspect your fence for any signs of damage, rot, or breaks.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fence?

While some types of garden, farm, and ranch fencing are less expensive than others, the overall cost depends on the materials you choose, how many acres you need to fence, and the purpose your fence needs to serve. Are you fencing in your garden, putting a perimeter around your property, or keeping livestock protected? At Montana Fence, we offer free estimates and can help answer any questions and guide you to making the right choice for your fencing project. Here are a few cost factors to consider when preparing for a ranch fence estimate.

GARDEN, FARM, AND RANCH FENCE COST FACTORS

Length – The more area you have, the more fencing you’ll need. The more fencing you need, the higher the costs. Of course, you can cut costs by choosing less expensive fencing types, such as swapping wooden posts for steel t-posts. Factor in miles of fence line to build, and costs can add up quickly if not kept in check.

Type of Fence -The kind of ranch fencing you need will be a deciding factor in how much you can estimate to spend when building your fence. If you rotate your livestock and graze them throughout multiple pastures, then temporary electric fencing may best suit your objectives. However, electric fencing has associated costs, such as purchasing an energizer and insulators. On the other hand, wood fencing costs depend on whether the posts are treated or natural. For example, treated posts can cost more than natural posts because they are pressure-treated with chemicals to keep the posts from soil rot and insect damage.

Gates & Braces – If you’re building permanent fencing, you’ll want to include gates at entrances and exits. So, when building your ranch fence, you’re not just purchasing posts and wire. You’ll also need to factor in the costs of gates to let you into and out of your fenced area. Not only should you factor in gates, but you also need to consider adding braces. Braces are used at the corners of fences and next to gates to support and strengthen the fence.

Maintenance of Garden, Farm, Ranch Fences and Gates

Whether it’s livestock scratching their backs on fence posts or harsh weather conditions wreaking havoc, garden, farm, and ranch fencing is constantly being put through the paces. When it comes to maintaining the longevity of your fence, there are a couple of steps we recommend you take.

Annual Inspections – Walking the parmiter of your garden, farm, or ranch fence at least once a year will help you identify how your fence is holding up and if it needs any repairs. Look for signs of sagging and stretching, rotted wood, or leaning posts. Does a wire need tightening up? Is there a shortage in the energizer of your electric fence, or is a garden gate not closing correctly? All these issues are easily fixable. Staying on top of regular fence maintenance helps ensure your fence investment stands the test of time.

Stay Ahead of Repairs – The amount of time you’ll spend on fence repairs depends on the type of fencing material you choose—do you have garden fencing, farm or ranch fencing? No matter the type, when you notice damage to your fence, it’s a good practice to address problems immediately. Continued strain from broken fences can weaken the integrity of the entire fence. As mentioned before, we recommend staying on top of regular fence maintenance to avoid further damage to your fence.

Applications of Garden, Farm, and Ranch Fences

Garden, farm, and ranch fencing comes in various materials and products, so naturally, this type of fencing has many applications. Here are some possible uses for garden, farm, and ranch fencing.

Livestock Management – Ranch fencing can be effectively used for livestock management. Whether you are building a corral for your horses, sorting pens for your cattle, or a small enclosure for your llamas, this type of fence application keeps livestock within a safe area and ensures they are kept from wandering or getting lost.

Property Management – Ranch fencing can mark property boundaries between neighboring parcels. It can also organize your acreage into sections between areas you raise livestock in and areas you grow crops.

Garden Fence – Garden fencing not only distinguishes your garden from the rest of your property, it also ensures critters such as deer and rabbits are kept from eating your precious flowers and vegetables. Other applications for garden fencing may include vertical gardening support for climbing plants.

Protective Barrier – Farm and ranch fencing can keep predators away from livestock. Portable electric fencing can be used as protection from bears when camping in wilderness areas. It can also be suitable for implementing rotating livestock grazing practices so your land stays healthy and vital.

Montana Fence: Premium Fencing Solutions Tailored to Your Garden, Farm, or Ranch Needs

At Montana Fence, we are expert fence builders with an extensive garden fencing portfolio and farm and ranch portfolio of experience building all types of garden, farm, and ranch fencing. Known for its bold, black look, iron has long been utilized in a variety of architectural structures—particularly fencing—because of its strength, style, and durability.

Fencing is more than just a barrier; it is a work of art that frames your property while enhancing its aesthetic appeal and security. Among the many fencing options available, ornamental iron fencing continues to stand out as a timeless choice that marries elegance with functionality.

If you want that traditional look with modern performance, consider installing an ornamental iron fence. At Montana Fence, our professionals have designed and installed ornamental iron fencing for home and property owners across Montana, so we can give you the expert’s take on this fencing material. To help you make an educated decision, we’ve broken down the pros, cons, and unique qualities that define ornamental iron fencing to help you determine whether it is the right fencing product for you.

  What is Ornamental Iron Fencing?

Stately and elegant, an ornamental iron fence adds unmatched distinction to your property. With their intricate designs and graceful curves, these fences make a bold statement, elevating the aesthetics of your space while providing security and durability.

Even though it’s called “iron,” ornamental iron fences are typically made from steel, a man-made alloy that comes from iron and carbon. It is easy to manipulate, resistant to rusting, and is also available in aluminum models if you want a lighter metal for your fence. Ornamental iron is more affordable than its expensive alternative, “wrought iron”, which is made from iron and iron silicate. So if you want a fence with a stately, traditional look but without the high price, ornamental iron may be for you.

Historical wrought iron fences came to the United States with the colonists. However, they were initially reserved for the wealthy due to the intricate hand-forging process involved. Each fence was uniquely and intricately crafted. Today, modern mechanization enables the mass production of ornamental iron fencing, offering a more uniform appearance, easier repairs, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional wrought iron. With its affordability and availability, ornamental iron fencing has become the preferred choice for the traditionalist at heart.

  Benefits of Ornamental Fencing

Ornamental iron fencing has long been a leading choice for both home and business owners because it provides a host of benefits, notably style and durability. Read on to learn more about the benefits of ornamental iron fencing and gates.

Aesthetic Appeal - Ornamental iron fences offer a classic, timeless appeal to your outdoor space. Regardless of the style and color of your home, an ornamental iron fence always compliments your property. Although there is a classic appeal to iron fences, you can add variety to your options to give them a more modern, traditional, or even rustic look.

Visibility - Ornamental iron fences are a statement piece and help accentuate your yard. They make your yard feel bigger and allow you to see the beauty of your entire property’s landscaping.

Durability - Ornamental iron is longer lasting and more durable than any other type of fencing material like wood or vinyl. Iron fencing withstands everyday wear-and-tear as well as unexpected damage from weather.

Variety of Design Options - Available in a wide spectrum of shapes and designs, from simple and functional to classic and ornate, ornamental iron gives you the freedom to choose what best suits your home or business’s style. You can also have your fence painted a different color from traditional black to better blend with your property.

Add Value to Your Home - An ornamental iron fence adds elegance and appeal to your yard, which reflects in the value of your home. In fact, the unique appeal of ornamental iron fences and gates can boost the value of your property. If you plan to sell your home, an ornamental iron fence can be a great investment that will offer you better returns in years to come.

Easy Installation - Many ornamental iron manufacturers design and manufacture their fencing in panels, meaning they’re easy to install by a Montana Fence professional. This equals a quick, efficient job that can provide you with a brand-new fence in quick installation time.

  Disadvantages of Ornamental Fencing

While ornamental iron has a long-standing history as one of the most popular choices of fence materials, that doesn’t mean it suits everyone. Before finalizing any decisions on installing an iron fence on your property, be sure you are aware of some of the challenges you could encounter with it.

Lack of Privacy - The largest drawback of ornamental iron fences is they don’t provide nearly as much privacy as other fencing options. Because iron fences are open-concept and have gaps, people and neighbors can potentially see into your yard and home.

Cost - A properly built and coated ornamental iron fence or gate is likely going to cost more than a vinyl or wood fence. However, when you weigh the strength and longevity of an iron fence and gates over the maintenance costs often associated with other fence types, that price gap over time really isn’t as wide as you think. But if you are on a tight budget, a high-quality iron fence at a low price can be tough to come by.

Difficulty to Follow Grade - While the welded, solid construction of an iron fence does wonders to make it stronger, that can also limit its use in hilly or heavily graded yards. Each eight-foot panel does rack a fair distance. They can be installed at an angle, but they will always be straight across that panel which can lead to a less smooth transition along the top line of the fence. A hilly yard isn’t a deal breaker for using iron, but you will have to make some extra considerations and work closely with your fencing contractor.

How Much Does It Cost to Build an Ornamental Fence?

Thanks to the development of man-made alloys like steel and advancements in manufacturing, ornamental iron fences deliver the look of a classic wrought iron fence but at a price point that is more affordable. Nevertheless, there are still a number of cost factors to consider when looking at ornamental iron fences.

  ORNAMENTAL FENCE COST FACTORS

Design and Customizations - A decorative iron fence naturally costs more than iron bars and plain iron. That’s because an elaborate fence takes time and skills to design and build, regardless of the material used. Expect to pay more for installing an ornamental iron fence to suit your liking.

Project Size - The amount of material required for a project is another significant cost factor. In other words, the bigger your property or the higher the fence, the more iron fence materials are needed to complete it. So, it pays to measure the whole enclosure, including the height, and identify the fence post locations and gate openings.

Fence Thickness - A fence made from thicker iron will be more durable and more expensive than one with a higher gauge. While shopping for materials, keep in mind that — contrary to what you might think — thicker iron has a lower gauge, and thinner iron has a higher gauge. More often than not, thicker or higher rated thicknesses will only be used in commercial settings.

Gates - If you want to add ornamental iron gates to your fencing, that will increase the overall cost. The cost of adding a gate varies depending on whether it is a simple gate or a decorative gate. If you want to have a double gate instead of a single gate, that will also increase the average cost.

  Maintenance of Ornamental Iron Fences

Ornamental iron fences are beautiful, timeless, and incredibly durable. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely maintenance-free. If you want to keep your iron fence looking great for years to come, there are some simple steps you need to take throughout the year. Read on to learn more ornamental iron fence maintenance tips.

Clean the Fence Regularly - Ornamental iron fencing doesn’t require special cleaning chemicals or custom tools to clean. Simply wash your fence every six months with soapy water, rinse it off, and let it air dry. You can use a soft-bristled brush or a rag for the bulk of the cleaning.

Avoid Consistent Water Exposure - This tip applies to any style of fence. If you have sprinklers near your fence, minimize the amount of spray that hits the fencing. While it may not leave any lasting damage to the fence itself, the mineral content in many waters may leave a hazy layer on your ornamental iron fence that will make it look less attractive.

Complete Fence Repairs in a Timely Manner - Keeping up on smaller repairs can prolong the life of your ornamental fence. A trick we love is to use black acrylic-based paint from the manufacturer for any scratches that may come from installation or normal wear and tear. It’s safe to use on the coating and makes the fence look brand new. This is also great if you are installing this style yourself and have to cut a panel to fit a certain area. Just prime and paint, and the metal should be sealed against any kind of rust or weathering.

  Applications of Ornamental Iron Fences

Whether your fence is needed for decorative or security purposes, ornamental iron’s construction provides sleek lines along with strength and durability. Here are just five of the many possible applications for ornamental iron fences:

Perimeter Fence – Whether you are a business owner trying to control access to certain areas or a homeowner wanting to keep children or animals safely enclosed in the yard, ornamental iron fences allow you to set a clear, well-defined border around your property.

Cemetery Fences – Metalwork, in the form of ornamental iron fencing, can add an air of timeless sophistication to a cemetery. At one time, iron was also believed to ward off evil spirits, which is why it surrounds many historical cemeteries. Consider iron fencing to surround individual or family plots, mark the boundary of a cemetery, or flank formal entrances.

Garden Fences – Installing an ornamental iron fence around your home garden can help protect your plants, vegetables, and flowers while creating a stylish enclosure.

Church Fences – The beauty and serenity of fine ornamental iron fence railings enhance the peacefulness of church settings. If you want beauty as well as security for a place of worship, ornamental iron is an ideal choice.

Pool Enclosures – A popular choice for homeowners, an ornamental iron fence offers an elegant option for enclosing your private pool. It is extremely durable, and with regular maintenance, it stands up well to harsh weather and the wet conditions that come along with pools. With narrow pickets, they also offer excellent sight lines for increased safety and supervision of the swimming pool area without compromising the look of your home and yard.

Montana Fence: Where Elegance and Security are Ironclad

In a world where security and aesthetics are paramount, Montana Fence emerges as a craftsman of timeless elegance. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials.” From the warm hue of redwood to the creamy white grain of spruce, each type of wood is unique, down to each knot and striation.

What better way to embrace the beauty of wood than by using it to fence the perimeter of your home or business? Among the many types of fencing materials available, wood remains a ubiquitous choice, popular for its pleasing aesthetic and affordability.

At Montana Fence, our top priority is pairing our customers with the ideal fencing solutions for their properties. There are many reasons why wood fences and gate supplies have long been a favored material for residential and commercial fencing. But is wood the right fence product for you? Before you make any decisions, let’s dive into the pros and cons of wood fencing and show you all they have to offer.

  What is Wood Fencing?

Wood fencing is one of the oldest types of fencing in the world—and for good reasons. Timeless, versatile, and easy to source, wooden fencing is an affordable, easy choice. Whether you’re looking to boost property value, contain pets and kids, increase security, or provide a bit of added privacy, wood fencing is a solid option (literally!).

Fencing land was a common pioneer practice to establish property boundaries and to keep livestock in yards or out of gardens. Before the invention of barbed wire, settlers used materials that were readily available—namely wood. By some estimates, there were some 6 million miles of wooden fence in America by the 1880s. Even the first fence surrounding the White House in Washington D.C. was a wooden post and rail fence commissioned in 1801 by Thomas Jefferson.

Although there are more types of fences available today than ever before, wood fences remain as relevant as they were in the days of our pioneer ancestors.

Benefits of Wood Fencing and Gates

Did you know that wood fences have more benefits than just their classic look? Wood fencing has become a popular choice for both home and business owners because it provides a host of benefits. From style to environmentally friendly, read on to learn more about the benefits of wood fencing and gates.

Aesthetic Appeal – The most obvious benefit of having a wood fence is that it simply looks gorgeous. Wood fences provide a natural look that blends well with the environment and enhances the overall appearance of a property. They create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Easily Customizable – Wood fences provide endless aesthetic possibilities from traditional and natural to contemporary and stylish. You can choose from different types of wood, each with its own unique look and attributes. Wooden fences can also be stained or painted in various colors, allowing owners to fine-tune the fence’s look to match the look of their property. There are also different design options, ranging from traditional picket fence styles to more modern looks, like picture frame styles.

Affordable – While the cost of wood fencing can vary depending on the type of wood you choose, the average cost is cheaper than other types of fencing. In comparison to, say, vinyl, producing wooden fencing material is not as expensive and the installation is relatively easy.

Natural Sound Barrier – Wood fences provide a surprising amount of noise reduction. This comes in handy if you live near roads with more traffic and activity (or neighbors with noisy kids and dogs). Denser wood materials and fences with no spacing between panels can help soak up outside noise and create a more comfortable space.

Environmentally Friendly – Because it’s a renewable resource and biodegradable, wood is a perfect option for those who are eco-conscious. There are also treatments available that can protect wooden fences from rot and pests without harming the environment. Plus, when it comes time for a new fence, the components of your old wooden fence can be repurposed or disposed of in an eco-conscious manner.

Easy to Repair – If a section of a wood fence is damaged, it is relatively simple and cost-effective to repair or replace it. Compared to other fence materials, wood can be patched or replaced without having to replace the entire fence.

Disadvantages of Wood Fencing and Gates

There’s little contesting that wood remains one of the most popular choices of fence material. However, a wooden fence is not for everyone. Before finalizing any decisions on installing a wood fence, be sure you are aware of some of the challenges you may face with it.

Vulnerability – Since wood is an organic material, it’s prone to damage from various sources, including moisture, insects, and rot. This can cause the wood to weaken, leading to structural damage and reducing the fence’s overall lifespan. Additionally, wood fences are susceptible to warping, which can cause panels to become misaligned and compromise the fence’s aesthetic.

Ongoing Maintenance Required – One major drawback of wood fences is that they require regular maintenance to help counter their vulnerabilities. Not everyone is keen on, or comfortable, taking care of their wood fence. Wood fence maintenance usually entails cleanings with a pressure washer or garden hose and consistent re-staining depending on the intensity of weather in your area. The work involved doesn’t even include fixing potential broken or cracked boards after withstanding strong winds or storms.

Limited Lifespan – Compared to steel, aluminum, or vinyl, a wood’s average lifespan of 20 years is relatively short. If you factor in improper maintenance, a wood fence can deteriorate even faster. It might need replacing in a little over half of its life expectancy. Choosing a high-quality wood can extend its lifespan, but not as long as the other types of fencing materials.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Wood Fence?

While wood is one of the most popular fencing options, there are several elements that impact the pricing structure of wood fencing. Here are a few cost factors to consider when preparing for a wood fence estimate.

  WOOD FENCE COST FACTORS

Height – The taller the fence, the more wood you will need and the more labor-intensive the installation will be. Weigh your need for curb appeal, privacy, and safety to figure out which fence height best fits your needs.

Type of Wood – Several types of wood—like cedar or pressure-treated pine—are commonly used for fence building and play a significant factor in the cost of your wood fence. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Choosing a wood type appropriate for your climate, budget, and aesthetic requirements is of the utmost importance. You should also consider the maintenance requirements of each wood type when deciding. Cedar is the most popular for residential fences due to its natural resistance to decay and insects. However, other types of wood, such as pine, are more affordable, so you need to weigh the costs.

Style – The style of the fence you choose will also impact the cost. Simple designs like dog-ear picket fences will be less expensive than more elaborate designs, like horizontal privacy or anything with a custom, decorative, or accent top.

For example, we have a product called PostMaster posts, which are steel posts that are used specifically for wood fences. The posts are practically invisible because “cover boards” are used to mask their appearance, giving the same classic look of traditional wooden fencing with the longevity of steel. These posts are more expensive than cedar or pressure-treated posts, so you will need to account for this cost if you select PostMaster posts for your project.

Additionally, the more complex the design, the more wood and attention to detail you will need. That means the installation will be more labor-intensive.

Staining – Not all fence companies offer pre-stained fences. But if they do, it might be worth considering. If you plan to stay in your house for a long time and want to avoid the sun damage and discoloration that can occur with time, staining is your best solution.

Gates – If you want to add gates to wood fencing, that will increase the overall cost. The costs of adding a gate varies mostly depending on its size, height, hardware, style, and wood type. And if you are fencing your backyard, you should get at least two gates: one on each side of the property to allow for more than one access point.

Maintenance of Wood Fences and Gates

Many people believe that wood fences aren’t sound investments. After all, wood can deteriorate faster than metal. Yet, it is possible for your wood fence to last a decade or longer. You merely need to apply the following maintenance tips:

Clean your fence every 2-3 years – It is easy for dirt and debris to build up on a wooden fence, especially in rural Montana towns. Cleaning your fence with a wire brush, power washer, or oxygenated bleach will properly remove buildup and keep your fence looking new.

Point sprinklers away from fencing – Water can be very damaging to wood and cause rotting and fading. Keeping sprinklers pointed away and any other water sources off your fence is a good way to lengthen the lifespan of your wood fence.

Apply protective coatings – To extend the life of your fence, it’s crucial to apply protective coatings. To protect wooden fences from moisture, UV rays, and pests, it’s advisable to apply a sealant or paint. This safeguarding measure preserves the wood’s strength and improves its resilience against the elements. This will help prevent rotting, warping, and discoloration.

Regular Inspections – At least once a year or after any major weather event, walk around the perimeter of your fence and check its condition. Look for signs of damage, including rot, insect damage, and warping. If you notice any issues, address them promptly to prevent them from worsening. Take a close look at the posts and rails. They should be firmly in place and not wobbly at all. If you discover any issues, call the experts at Montana Fence for repairs.

Move Your Grill – Did you know your grill may be causing unsightly damage to your wooden fence? Smoke and grease can cause your fence to deteriorate. To resolve this issue before it starts, move your grill as far away from your fence as possible.

Minimize Contact with Excessive Vegetation and Dirt – Try to minimize contact with the ground, plants and trees. Anything your fence touches can allow extra moisture into the wood. Trees, plants and vines can also loosen pickets and cause structural issues with posts and pickets.

  Applications of Wood Fences

In addition to their affordability, wood fences are popular for their timeless aesthetic. This type of fence offers the perfect balance of privacy, aesthetics, and sound reduction.

Garden Fence – Installing a wood fence around your home garden can help protect your plants, vegetables, and flowers by creating a beautiful, natural looking boundary.

Agricultural Fence – Wooden fences have been the go-to fencing for farms and ranches for centuries. Enjoy the timeless look of wood on your agrarian property while embracing modern customization.

Privacy Screen – Wood fencing is highly customizable and just one panel can provide a necessary screen for your hot tub area, entryway, or trash enclosure. Do you want to avoid the dreaded painting and staining maintenance of wood fences? Vinyl fences and gates may be the solution you’re looking for.

Although vinyl is a relative newcomer to the fencing market, vinyl as a material has been around for over a century. A German chemist named Eugene Baumann unintentionally invented vinyl in 1872. Baumann left a tube of compounds exposed to sunlight, which produced a white substance that would come to be known as vinyl. In the early 1920s, vinyl was refined into the more flexible material we’re now familiar with. If it weren’t for an absent-minded scientist, we would not have vinyl at all today.

At Montana Fence, our goal is to help our customers find the perfect fencing solutions for their home or business. There are many reasons why people choose our vinyl fence and gate supplies for their properties. But is vinyl the right fence product for your project? Let’s explore the ins and outs of vinyl fencing to better help you make that decision. Read on to learn more about vinyl fencing, its pros and cons, and much more.

  What is Vinyl Fencing?

Vinyl fences are some of the most durable, long-lasting, and best-looking fences available to property owners. Vinyl is a plastic-based fencing option for those who wish to go a different route than wood or chain-link fences.

Vinyl is a synthetic material made from the natural substances ethylene and chlorine. When combined, these substances form polyvinyl chloride, also known as PVC. Today, vinyl is the second largest manufactured and sold plastic resin in the world. Known for being modern-looking, cost-effective, and low maintenance, vinyl fences and gates are a solid choice for anyone looking to add durability with a touch of style to their outdoor area.

Benefits of Vinyl Fencing and Gates

Durability You Can Count On – A vinyl fence won’t let you down when it comes to strength. The product we carry and install is going to be different from what someone would find in a large box store. It’s tough enough to withstand Montana and Idaho’s unpredictable weather. Vinyl is durable and can undergo sudden, extreme temperature changes. It doesn’t crack in the cold or corrode in hot climates. Vinyl does not absorb moisture, so it won’t warp, rot, or rust.

Versatility & Aesthetic Appeal – Vinyl fencing comes in a wide variety of designs and colors to match or complement your existing building. From picket and split rail to a full privacy fence, there’s a style to suit everyone’s taste. Vinyl is also available in several different colors and textures, so it can be seamlessly integrated into any design.

Low Maintenance Upkeep – Unlike wood or chain link fences, vinyl is easy to maintain. It requires no extra paint, sealants, or stains to maintain its original beauty and color. The colored vinyl may fade a bit over time due to sun exposure, but it is limited. White vinyl tends to maintain its original brightness. Additionally, the natural color of vinyl does not show dents, scratches, or other blemishes.

Increased Curb Appeal & Property Value – Choosing to install a vinyl fence is an investment in your home or commercial property. With a variety of styles and colors to choose from, you can create a beautiful curb appeal that suits your tastes and enhances the appearance of your property and your neighborhood. When it comes time to sell your property, vinyl fencing can make your property even more appealing. Premium vinyl is manufactured to last a lifetime, so prospective buyers will know they don’t have to worry about repairing or replacing it.

Easy Repair Options – In the rare instance that a small section of your vinyl fence gets damaged, you can replace a single picket or slat just like you would with wood. Where box stores or other vinyl providers may only have full panels available, Montana Fence vinyl goes together more similarly to wood fencing. Two foot wide pickets link together like legos, and the tension holds it together. Separate rails, posts, pickets, and caps are all available at our retail locations.

Disadvantages of Vinyl Fencing and Gates

High Initial Investment – The upfront cost of a vinyl fence, including its installation, is one of its biggest drawbacks. Higher-quality vinyl is usually more expensive than wood fencing. However, vinyl fencing is still the more cost-effective solution in the long run because it is low maintenance.

Lower Wind Rating – Wind load varies between vinyl styles. For the most part, when installed correctly, vinyl is perfectly suitable for normal wind loads. Areas with higher winds may want to consider another option to avoid unnecessary repairs.

Limited Customization – While it’s true that vinyl materials come in a variety of colors and designs, you cannot customize them beyond their original form. That’s why those who want more freedom in modifying their fence choose wood instead. With vinyl, you won’t be able to change the molded design and color. You might love how it looks at first. But if you decide you want a different color in the future, you have no option but to either stick with what you got or install new pickets.

Not Eco-friendly – Vinyl may be the most versatile type of plastic, but it’s also one of the least eco-friendly. From production to its disposal, it releases chemicals that can harm the environment. Also, an old, run-down vinyl fence is not easy to dispose of because it is not biodegradable. Because it is an extremely durable plastic material, vinyl material endures long past its use as a fence.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Vinyl Fence?

While it’s one of the most popular fencing options, there are several elements that impact the pricing structure of vinyl fencing. Variations in height, design, color and inclusion of vinyl gate installation can all affect the final cost. Here are a few cost factors to consider when preparing for a vinyl fence estimate.

  VINYL FENCE COST FACTORS

Vinyl Quality – The vinyl products used by Montana Fence are high quality and American made. Our vinyl has thicker walls and is going to be far sturdier than what you would find at the box store. This does end up being more expensive when compared to some other residential options

Style – While vinyl may not be the most flexible material, there is still plenty of room for personal taste to come into play with the construction of the fence. Vertical privacy fences or 3-rail ranch style fences are the most common and thus most cost-effective. Styles like open picket, basket weave, two-tone, or something else more custom will be more expensive.

Color – All of our vinyl comes in a variety of colors that can range in price. White is the cheapest and Woodland Select colors will be the most expensive. We have color samples in all of our showrooms!

Height – For vinyl fences, the fence height has a slight impact on cost. A taller fence means more material, but the difference for the various heights is not as large as one may think. Weigh your need for curb appeal, privacy, and safety to figure out which fence height best fits your needs.

Gates – If you want to add gates for vinyl fencing, that will increase the overall cost. The costs of adding a gate varies mostly depending on its size. Simpler 4-6 foot walk gates are going to be more similarly priced. Double gates for larger openings will be more expensive and aren’t recommended for exceedingly large openings.

Number of Posts – Installing posts is one of the most labor-intensive parts of the process of building a fence. You need to dig post holes, fill them with concrete, and set the posts in carefully to make sure everything aligns properly. As the number of posts increases so does the cost of the overall fence project.

Maintenance of Vinyl Fencing and Gates

One of the biggest advantages of vinyl fencing is that it requires little to no maintenance after installation to keep it looking brand new. Here are a few easy maintenance tips to help keep your vinyl fences and gates in pristine condition.

Clean the Fence Regularly – As easy as this trick is, it is vastly overlooked. A quick spray down with the hose will keep your vinyl fence clean and prevent damage-causing buildup. If you want to use a cleaning solution, we recommend Simple Green Spray or even some soapy water.

Inspect the Fence Caps – Due to expansion and contraction caused by shifting weather conditions, it’s not uncommon for fence post caps to come loose every now and again. If any are loose or aren’t holding up as well in the wind, use a specially formulated PVC fence glue to secure the caps back in place.

Fix any Problems Right Away – Vinyl fences can be quirky. Issues are hard to find with annual inspections. In most instances when a problem occurs, such as a picket coming undone, it is easiest to have it repaired right away. Extreme weather can be a pressing issue for vinyl fences, so keeping up on repairs, especially after the winter months, is vital.

Check Fence Stability – Once a year, walk around your fence’s perimeter and check every post to ensure they are sturdy. Posts can come loose due to heavy rain, snow, wind, freezing, and thawing. If you discover an unsteady post, call the experts at Montana Fence for repairs.

  Applications of Vinyl Fencing

In addition to their durability, vinyl fences are popular for their stylish, modern aesthetic. You don’t have to paint, screw, repair, or mend a vinyl fence, and it will look great and last for years to come.

Trash Enclosure – Vinyl fencing for a trash enclosure is a great option, as they do not rot and are super easy to clean while looking great.

Gardens – Installing a vinyl fence around your home garden can help protect your plants, vegetables, and flowers by creating a beautiful boundary that enhances the look of any garden.

Feel Secure When You Choose Montana Fence – Where Vinyl is Final

When it comes to fencing materials, vinyl is the stylish, resilient rock star that can take your residential or commercial property to the next level. In fact, chain link is so ubiquitous, you probably see it every day, whether it’s at a park, a city pool, or in your own backyard. That is largely because it’s one of the most cost-effective, durable, and versatile fencing materials on the market.

Besides being one of the most popular fencing styles, chain link fences also have a long history. Chain link has been around since 1844 when British inventor Charles Barnard developed a wire-weaving machine based on the cloth-weaving machines of the day. While the technology in manufacturing chain link has changed some since then, the demand for chain link fence suppliers is as strong as ever.

At Montana Fence we love not only providing the perfect fencing solutions for our customers, but we appreciate fencing’s long history and variety of applications. There are many reasons why home and business owners choose our local chain link fence supplies for their outdoor spaces. But is chain link the right fence product for your project? Let’s take a deeper look at chain link fences and gates to better help you make that decision.

  What is Chain Link Fencing?

Arguably one of the most popular styles of fence, chain link fences are a type of woven fence that typically uses galvanized or linear low-density polyethylene-coated steel wire. The wires run vertically and are bent into a zigzag pattern so that each “zig” hooks with the wire immediately on one side and each “zag” with the wire immediately on the other. This forms the characteristic diamond pattern seen in this type of fence. This mesh steel net attaches between posts, each of which gets driven deep into the ground or set in concrete. Chain link fences are known for their simplicity, durability, and affordability, which is why they can be seen in a wide variety of applications in both residential and commercial settings.

BENEFITS OF CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES

Budget Friendly – From manufacturing to installation to maintenance, you will not incur a lot of expenses with chain link fences and gates, because the material and labor cost for the installation is cheaper. And since you don’t have to reapply paint or stain chain link fencing like you need to with wooden fencing, you also save on upkeep costs.

High Durability – This type of fence is incredibly tough, as it’s made from interlocking coated steel wire and galvanized with a corrosion-resistant zinc coating to protect it against the weather. Plus, because the wind passes through the openings, the material is far less susceptible to weather-related damage.

Low Maintenance – When properly installed, this fencing requires minimal maintenance. Thanks to galvanized, aluminized, or vinyl coating, chain link fencing won’t rust or gather dirt.

Versatility – Chain-link fences are incredibly adaptable and commonly used in both commercial and residential properties. You can find them in front yards, sports fields, around swimming pools, and establishing property lines. Also, if you use PVC-coated fencing, like black chain link fencing, you can choose a color that complements your home or business.

High Security – This strong steel fencing can create a secure barrier, keeping out anyone who shouldn’t be on your property. The fence can be built to a significant height and additional deterrents, such as barbed wire, can be added at the top to prevent climbing.

DISADVANTAGES OF CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES

Limited Privacy – Chain-link fences are not considered privacy fences because they do not offer the solid wall of protection that wood fencing or vinyl fencing would have. You can add privacy slats to chain link fencing to cover some of the holes in the material, but you can still partly see through those. If you need a fence specifically for privacy, you will be better off going with a different option.

Lack of Creative Design Options – Chain link fences have fewer options when it comes to design and finishing. The colors, for example, are normally limited to black, green, brown, or silver. The material choices are also limited, with most chain link fences being constructed out of galvanized steel and coated with PVC for anything colored.

Less Aesthetic Appeal – While it’s not exactly terrible to look at, most people don’t consider chain link fencing beautiful aesthetically. In most cases, a chain link fence won’t do a lot to improve the overall visual appeal of your property. It’s a standard fencing material that serves its purpose functionally rather than aesthetically.

Lower Increase in Property Value – Having a fenced yard is better than having no fence at all, but a chain-link fence isn’t going to do as much for your property value. If you’re looking to resell your property in the future, you will attract more buyers at a higher price point by opting for vinyl or wood fencing.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BUILD A CHAIN LINK FENCE?

Although it is one of the simplest fencing options, there are still many variables in the pricing structure of chain link fencing. Variations in height, gauge, linear footage, and finish can all affect the overall cost. While it is an affordable option, there are a lot of decisions to make that will affect the estimate.

  Chain Link Fence Cost Factors

Overall Dimensions – The size of your fence helps determine the materials required and how much labor is needed to get the job done. The price per foot can change dramatically depending on the height and material type you choose.

Diamond Size – Much of the appeal of a chain link fence comes from the simple but still decorative diamond-shaped pattern formed by twisted wire. Measured on the inside of the diamond in both diagonal directions, smaller diamonds result in stronger fences that are more expensive because they require more wire to twist to make the fence. Larger diamonds are less secure, but also less expensive. We typically stock and install 2-inch fabric in both commercial and residential settings.

Gauge or Mesh Thickness – The gauge measurement represents the thickness of the wire that creates the mesh of a chain link fence. The numbers are inverse to the gauge—lower numbers equal thicker wire. Measurements run from 6 gauge, which is the thickest gauge available, to 11 gauge. Thicker gauges are sturdier and stronger, and therefore cost more, while higher gauges offer a lighter, less visible fence and are less expensive. The most common gauge we have on hand is 11 gauge or 9 gauge. Feel free to give us a call to see what is available!

Post and Rail Gauge – The thickness of posts and rails are another factor to consider. The pipe used for posts and top rails can range from 16 gauge tubing up to 40 gauge pipe. Higher gauges can be driven into the ground in some cases, while lower gauges have to be set in concrete. The diameter of these posts and rails can also range depending on the type of project you have. For something like a backyard, you may only need tubing as small as 1 ⅜” for your top rail with slightly larger posts. For more industrial projects that require more security, something as large as 2 ⅞” pipe may be needed for line posts and can require even larger and heavier posts for gates.

Gates – Be sure to consider whether you will need gate access through your new fence. Knowing what type and size of chain link gate you will need takes a little planning ahead. The three main chain link gate options are swing gates, cantilever gates, and rolling gates. They can range in size and offer different types of access. If you need help deciding what kind of gate will work best for your project, we are happy to help you come up with a solution based on your layout.

MAINTENANCE OF CHAIN LINK FENCES AND GATES

One of the main perks of chain link fencing is that it requires little to no maintenance to keep it looking like new. Here are some simple maintenance tips to help keep your chain link fencing in tip-top shape for years to come.

Clean Your Fence Regularly – Chain link is effortless to clean, requiring only water to remove mild dirt and debris and simple dish soap for removing bird feces and other stuck-on stains. Use your hose on a high-powered setting to spray down your fence for easy cleanup or grab a scrub brush and soapy water to clean tougher areas.

Avoid Growth of Plants and Trees – Vines, flowers, and sucker trees can displace your fence and cause damage by lifting and displacing links. Removing these plants and trees immediately will help prevent growth and ensure the longevity of your fence.

Make Repairs as Needed – The areas that may wear out first on your chain link fence are the connections to posts. As the fence gets pulled on or climbed over, connections can become loose and whole lengths of chain link can pull away from posts. Gates may also sag or dig into the ground when you open and close them. If you see any chain link beginning to sag or pull away, call the experts at Montana Fence for repairs.

  APPLICATIONS OF CHAIN LINK

In addition to affordability and durability, chain link fences are often sought after because of the versatility they offer in both residential and commercial settings. Here are just five of the most common applications:

Perimeter Fence – If you want an easy way to mark the boundaries of your property, chain link is the way to go. Whether you’re a business owner trying to control access to certain areas or a homeowner trying to keep children or animals safely enclosed within the yard, chain link allows you to define the border around your property.

Security Fence – Unlike other materials that can completely impede your view of what’s happening on the other side, chain link fence allows you to maintain your visibility outside of the property. In areas where enhanced security is required, such as airports, military bases, correctional facilities, or industrial factories, barbed wire or razor wire can be added to minimize the ability to penetrate the enclosed area.

Park or School Fence – Schools and parks across the country rely on chain link fencing to create safe and secure barriers around them. Chain link fence provides school children a clearly defined space for their play and delivers peace of mind for parents and school administrators.

Animal Enclosures – Chain link is a great option if you’re trying to create a safe and secure dog run or outdoor kennel. Installing an enclosure for your dog can give your pet the outdoor time they crave while you rest easy knowing that they’re contained, safe, and getting some exercise.

Athletic Fields – Chain link fencing comes in handy at baseball parks and other sports complexes to mark boundaries for players and fans and establish a secure perimeter around the stadium. It also adds height to the stadium to protect guests from foul balls and other debris.

REQUEST YOUR FREE CHAIN LINK FENCE ESTIMATE WITH MONTANA FENCE

At Montana Fence, we recognize that fencing is often the first visual introduction to a property. Whether you are looking for enhanced security and privacy around your property, better protection for your children and pets, or to boost home value and curb appeal, a fence is a positive extension of your home or property. Successful fence installation takes careful planning and preparation before construction can begin. One of the first steps in the process is getting a professional fence estimate.

An estimate meeting with a reputable fence company like Montana Fence is a valuable learning opportunity for both the client and the fence builders. For the client, the meeting allows you to gain insight into how the fence installation process will work at your property. For the fence builder, the meeting helps determine whether they are the best fit for your project in terms of project scale, timing, and type of fence.

In the days leading up to a fence estimate meeting, you want to make sure you prepare accordingly. That way, you can ask the right questions and get all the information you need to make an informed decision about moving forward with your fence project. Here are our top tips for preparing for a fence estimate.

8 Tips for Preparing for a Fence Estimate

  1. IDENTIFY THE NEEDS OF THE FENCE

To help make decisions about your fence, you should first consider why you want one in the first place. Is privacy your main concern or is decoration? Many homeowners like the idea of installing a fence for privacy. They look forward to enjoying time in their backyard without the chance of making eye contact with a neighbor. Do you have small children or pets? Installing a fence around your yard can allow them to explore freely and play without you worrying about losing track of them. Do you need walk-through or drive-through gates? Are you only concerned with aesthetic appeal? Whatever the case may be, determine precisely why you want a fence before making any other decisions.

  2. CALCULATE YOUR BUDGET

Assess your finances and decide how much money you want to spend on a fence. Make sure to build in some variable costs, as unexpected changes are bound to occur. With this information, your fence builder can better offer insights into fence products and services that most align with your budget. Your fencing budget will most likely dictate each additional step in the process, so determining your budget is one of the first things you should do.

  3. KNOW YOUR PROPERTY LINE

While good fences make good neighbors, fences in the wrong location can cause serious problems. If you plan on installing a fence on your property, it is important to first determine the legal perimeter of your property. If you don’t have a copy of your deed or plot plan, we recommend hiring a land surveyor to complete a boundary survey and stake your property line. Not only will this help you better visualize where your fence will be and better communicate that to your neighbors, but it will also ensure that the fence is located just inside your property line. Not being knowledgeable of your property lines can lead to costly fixes in the future, boundary issues with your neighbors, and even potential municipal disputes.

  4. REVIEW ZONING CODES AND HOA REGULATIONS

Before investing a bunch of your time and money into a new fence installation, make sure to review your city’s zoning codes and any HOA covenants to verify that the style and height of the fence you’ve chosen is allowed in your neighborhood. Regulations tend to vary by location, meaning you may need to apply for a fence-building permit. If your neighborhood has an HOA or neighborhood association, be sure to find out their rules regarding things like fence height, color, and material. It’s much easier to address these issues in the beginning rather than having to tear down a completed fence after the fact.

  5. CHOOSE THE BEST FENCE MATERIAL FOR YOUR PROPERTY

From chain link and vinyl to ornamental iron and wood, there are a wide variety of fencing styles and materials to choose from. In considering what material would be best for your property, remember to think about your fence goals and needs, how much maintenance time you want to invest, what your HOA regulations require, and the pros and cons of each fence type. At Montana Fence we know our fencing products like the back of our hand and will happily review the different fence materials with you during your estimate.

  6. CONSIDER YOUR FENCE MAINTENANCE NEEDS

Once the fence is up, you can’t just walk away. A fence is a structure that needs regular care. You should ask yourself how long you want to spend maintaining your fence. Wooden fences, for instance, involve the most maintenance because they require staining or sealing every few years. On the other hand, vinyl fences are comparable in strength and durability to wood fences and never need re-staining. This lack of ongoing maintenance makes vinyl a popular fencing choice. So before choosing your fence material, consider the upkeep that will go along with it.

  7. TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS

If you are building a fence along your property line, your neighbor may have some partial ownership of the fence. Talk to them ahead of time to let them know your plans. This new fence will affect them as much as it will affect you, so give them a chance to comment on your plans. Also, if you have a decent relationship with your neighbor, you may even be able to split the cost of a new fence.

  8. PLAN YOUR PROJECT SCHEDULE

Once you’ve worked out the details of your fence, it’s time to plan for the installation. In reality, a fence can be installed at almost any time of year. However, some factors may make a certain time of year more favorable. Installing in the spring and summer means there are often few weather conditions to contend with but that’s also when builders get overloaded with new projects. Consider the season as well as your own personal urgency when planning your fence installation schedule.

Plan Ahead: Schedule Your Free Fence Estimate with Montana Fence

At Montana Fence, we understand that a fence installation is an investment and something that will serve you and your property well for years to come. In Montana, your fence should be built to withstand the most rugged of weather. But just because it’s built for any conditions doesn’t mean it should be built in any conditions! Seasonal variability in precipitation and temperature impacts the fence-building process from start to finish, from the materials to the team installing your fence.

If you’re working with fence contractors like Montana Fence for your build, the weather isn’t the only factor to consider. You’ll also want to think about how seasonal demand can impact contractor availability. Because Montana’s late summer months are typically excellent fence-building conditions, that’s usually when folks prefer to have their professional installation completed.

To help you plan ahead and have your fencing project completed at the optimal time, we’ll walk you through the most important things to consider when planning for fence installs. We want you to feel confident in your decisions because we know any fencing project is an investment of both time and money!

When is the Best Time to Build a Fence?

When choosing the ideal timing to tackle your fence project, there are two things to consider: weather and seasonal demand. Anyone who’s spent time in Montana during the winter months knows instinctively that winter weather conditions create challenges for outdoor projects. You don’t want to repaint your home during a blizzard, just like you wouldn’t want to stain a new wood fence. Plus, the frozen ground makes post-digging tough.

Now, that’s not to say it’s impossible—our seasoned, weather-hardy expert fencers can install certain types of fence posts with hydraulic post-pounders all winter long. The bottom line is that fence projects go most smoothly and quickly when the weather is cooperative. With spring often bringing late snow, rain, and mud, that means June, July, and August are the ideal months for fencing projects.

That highly-desirable window also means July and August are when the majority of people choose to tackle their new fence installation. So seasonal demand is another consideration when choosing the best time to build a fence. During the busy summer season, Montana Fence and many other local fence builders are scheduled out months in advance. So, if you have a last-minute project, finding available fencing installers may be challenging. We recommend giving us a call or filling out a form for a free fencing estimate to see if we can fit your project in or make recommendations for a contractor that fits your timeline the best.

What to Consider When Planning for Fence Installs

The urgency of your project – If your fencing project isn’t urgent—like adding on a decorative fence for aesthetics—then the best approach is to plan in advance to make sure your project is on a schedule that works for you.

Getting a free fence estimate in advance – When you reach out to Montana Fence for a free fence estimate, you get a property visit, a project vision based on your preferred style and layout, and an accurate, custom quote. But these aren’t the only factors worth considering! Especially in communities like Livingston, Bozeman, Great Falls, and Big Timber, you want to consider the best fence design for wind.

Montana is one of the windiest states in the country (the 4th windiest, in fact). The state’s record high windspeed was in February of 2002 when the wind gusted to 143 mph. That’s nearly twice as fast as “hurricane force” intensity. Montana’s the place we love to call home, but to do so, we must give the weather its due respect. Building codes protect your house, but what protects your fence? How do you choose the best fence for high wind areas?

The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a new fence and have it blow down during the next bout of strong wind. Below we’ll explore the best fence for high wind areas so you can maximize your fencing investment.

Best Fence for High Wind Areas: Montana Edition

Why Not Just Get Fencing from a Box Store?

We get this question a lot, so we want to address this first. Not all fences are created equal, especially when you get down to the materials. Fence products sold in big box stores, such as premade wood or vinyl panels, may be sufficient for some states, but they won’t cut it here in Montana.

  Why not?

Those materials are not designed to withstand the high wind speeds and pressures found in Big Sky Country. They tend to be much thinner and more susceptible to breaking or cracking under pressure. A few seasons of wear and tear or one big weather event can be enough to take out your multi-thousand-dollar fence investment. That risk increases if the fence is designed for decorative, not functional, use.

What Fencing is Best for High Wind Areas?

Fortunately, there are sturdier fencing materials available that stand up to the elements. At Montana Fence, we recommend metal, chain link, and cast iron fencing for high wind areas. These materials are generally more long-lasting, in that their materials are not only more durable but allow for air to flow through the fencing.

If you are set on wanting a wood fence for your property, we recommend an option that has spaces between the pickets. This could include options like semi-privacy or shadowbox.. These allow for air to pass through the fence rather than press against it and weaken the materials.

How to Plan for a Fencing Project in High Wind Areas

  1. Consider Its Purpose

Planning for a fence means looking at all the purposes your fence might serve, like the following:

  Protecting your home

  Enclosing your yard

  Keeping children and pets safe

  Designating your property line

  Adding decoration

  2. Account for Wind Levels and Other Weather Factors

Wind may not be the only extreme weather you face in your hometown. You may need your fence to withstand heavy snowfall, block direct sunlight, or resist rainy downpours. But does it also work with the weather? Whether you want to block, deflect, or let through the wind and snow will determine how you sort through the options for the best fence in wind areas to find what works best for your property.

  3. Speak to a Local Fence Building Professional

Local fence builders know the local landscape and can be one of your greatest assets. They’re uniquely qualified to help you choose not only fence materials but also the design and orientation of your fence.

For example, in Montana, the combination of wind and snow often creates long, deep drifts called “windbreaks.” These tedious piles of snow can cause roadblocks for you, your family, and even your livestock if you have windbreaks in pastures. If your property tends to drift in areas, or regularly faces strong winds, you may need to orient a fence to account for these snow-bearing winds.

This is where working with fence contractors will be of particular importance. A fencing professional can assess your needs and the local weather conditions and make recommendations for the best fencing materials and fence orientation for your situation. This could include determining whether you want a resistance material (fencing that withstands the weather) or a resistance design (a fencing style with more surface area to block the wind). A licensed fencing professional can help find the perfect balance of fence surface area, strength, function, and placement to create the fence that best suits your needs.

At Montana Fence, we provide free fence estimates where we walk you through all the factors of look, function, cost, and natural features of the landscape so you can make informed decisions about your fence installation.

Whether you have an existing fence that needs repair from high wind or weather damage, Montana Fence is here to help. Wood material serves a classic look that everyone loves. Wood is easy to pair with any established home aesthetic as the material is easy to stain or paint. Wood fence provides a neutral look and traditional feel to complement gardens, neighborhoods, and landscapes nicely. Wood fence even doubles as a privacy fence giving you your own private oasis at home.

  Vinyl

Vinyl is known for its white picket fence and “American dream” aesthetic. In other words, the material cannot be painted or stained. However, it is easy to keep clean. Simply rinse your fence off with a garden hose or use soap or a Simple Greenwash for a deep clean. Vinyl repairs can be more difficult when compared to repairing a wood fence. Extreme weather can be brutal on vinyl material and create cracks or holes in the fence. Vinyl is installed like legos in that the pieces interconnect and lock together. What’s nice about this is, like with wood, if damage occurs, you don’t have to replace an entire panel like you would with a box store product. You only have to worry about a single picket or rail. But not all chain link fence materials are created equal, especially when it comes to looks. Often, we think of chain link fences as having an industrial or commercial quality. Picture traditional silver-colored fencing that surrounds many dog parks, softball fields, public swimming pools, and industrial lots. Today, we have a beautiful new option that combines all the reliable features that chain link fences are known for with an attractive aesthetic. Enter the black chain link fence.

Stunning Design: Black Chain Link Fencing

Color-coated chain link fences play double duty in the looks department. Black fences make for an aesthetic that’s both sleek and striking. Depending on where you install your fence and the background of buildings, landscape, and other features, black fences both draw the eye in an attractive way and blend into the surrounding landscape. Basically, a passerby may not see it at first glance, but when they do, they notice how good it looks!

That balance is possible because of both color theory and landscaping style trends. Black is a modern yet classic look that carries a certain elegance to it. Here’s a quick history lesson as to why black fencing looks so good: black chain link fencing calls to mind the timelessness of wrought iron fencing, a fencing material that first came into use in the 15th century and rose in popularity in the 1700-1800s. This trend continued through the mid-19th-century Victorian era, around the time ornamental iron made its way across the Atlantic to the US with immigrant ironsmiths. Black chain link fencing speaks to our appreciation for that timeless look and feel, which makes it feel more elegant than uncoated silver or galvanized chain link fence materials.

Benefits of Black Chain Link Fencing

  1. Versatility

Black chain link fencing is a great all-around choice. It’s an excellent choice for yards, gardens, or commercial spaces where children and pets might need to be kept safe and secure. It’s also helpful for fencing in swimming pools or establishing property lines. Some city codes or HOAs may also designate the usage of non-silver colored chain link fencing, making black a great option.

The functional, practical benefits of black chain link fencing materials have to do with their durability and low-maintenance features, as well as their relatively simple installation and affordability.

  2. Subtle Elegance

Another benefit of black fencing—chain link in particular—is its subtleness. Black absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which means that black materials blend into the surrounding environment. In wooded or shady spaces, black chain link fencing almost seems to disappear. In yards, open fields, or against light-colored backgrounds, a black fence line creates a strong visual balance with that timeless style we all love. Additionally, its “open” design lets the light through, meaning better visibility and more direct sunlight. This makes a big difference during long winter months with lots of low-angle lighting.

  3. Durability

Chain link is strong—there’s no doubt about that. Ideal for high-use areas, pets, kids, or commercial spaces, this type of fencing material is made of individual strands of aluminum or steel wire woven together in a diamond pattern that forms a mesh known as “fabric.” Chain link fencing—especially the high-quality, vinyl-coated materials that our team sells and installs—has a longer lifespan (up to multiple decades) with much less upkeep than fences made from wood or other materials.

When the Montana wind blows, chain link fencing lets wind through its mesh fabric — making it far more resilient to wind damage than other materials, as it won’t be tugged at by air currents that might create bending or warping in the foundation or fence itself.

  4. Low Maintenance

While wood fences are susceptible to water damage, rot, or fading, chain link is highly rust-resistant, requiring no maintenance with restaining or treatments. Chain link is known for its strength, but should your chain link fence become damaged—say, by an adventurous dog—repairs are simple, easy, and affordable. Plus, replacement materials will be a perfect color match for the rest of your fence, so repair work will be essentially invisible.

  5. Simple Installation

Fencing companies and homeowners alike love black chain link because it is relatively easy and fast to install. Whether you are fencing off a section of your property, or an entire yard, there are many different heights, gate features, and other options available in black chain link materials. We recommend considering the terrain you’ll be fencing (as well as your purposes for the fence) to determine both the material that’s right for you and the height of your new or replacement fence. For example, while black chain link sits beautifully across rolling terrain, it is not necessarily the best material for very steep inclines or other difficult, intricate landscape features.

Request Your Free Fence Estimate with Montana Fence

With all the benefits of black chain link fencing, we are big fans of this fencing option. Wood, vinyl, and chainlink are some of the names many people recognize, but today we’re talking about one of our favorite choices at Montana Fence: our wood and metal fence. This unique fence style is made of wood paneling paired with a sturdy metal post called a PostMaster. The wood and metal privacy fence is known for many benefits, including longevity, simple maintenance, enhanced property value, excellent return on investment, looks, and—last but not least—privacy. Below we’ll review how a wood and metal privacy fence can withstand Montana weather, add privacy to your home, and complement your home’s aesthetic.

  Longevity and Maintenance

Everyone loves the classic wood fence look, but what people don’t love about wood is the rot, breakage, and shorter lifespan of wood fencing. That’s where combining wood with a metal post comes in and saves the day! A wood fence with metal posts helps to increase the life of your fence and lowers the amount of maintenance required each year to keep your fence looking fresh and performing well.

Many of our homeowners chose a wood and metal fence for their home due to its ability to stand up against harsh Montana weather, like snow, hail, sleet, and wind. Here are a few examples of why wood and metal fences are a durable choice for your Montana home:

Wood and metal fences use galvanized steel for the posts, eliminating the threat of rot in winter and spring.

There’s a decreased chance of wood warping due to the extra stability provided by the metal posts.

Depending on the soil and moisture level of the ground, selecting metal posts for your wood fence could help extend the fence’s life by 15-30 more years.

Very little maintenance is needed to upkeep a wood and metal fence. Usually, only a bit of staining and painting is needed to keep the fence looking new, and rust control is only required when the need arises.

  Increased Property Value

Adding a fence to any property will increase the property value, but adding a wood and metal fence will enhance the value more than some other types of fence. The durability of this style makes the property more valuable, as the fence will not require as much maintenance compared to a barbed wire or wood-only fence. Wood and metal fences typically cost more than other materials, but the overall return on investment makes it all worthwhile.

  Worth the Cost

Although the cost of privacy fencing is more than other fencing options, it is very affordable when weighing the cost against the overall benefits. The lifespan of a privacy fence like this is very long compared to other types of fencing. PostMaster posts do not rot and their custom shape, which includes pre-drilled holes along the length of the post, accommodates any layout. This also makes small repairs, like swapping out a picket, super easy. This means that there are few recurring costs, making a wood and metal fence worth the initial up-front investment.

Like other types of fences, the initial cost for the fence itself will depend on a number of factors. At Montana Fence, we offer free fencing estimates, so reach out to us today for a free estimate. Below are a few of the general factors that contribute to the overall cost of a new fence:

  Material

  Layout including gates

  Size or total linear footage

  Installation Difficulty

  Wonderful Aesthetic Appeal

Here’s the deal with a wood fence with metal posts: they just look great! The custom shape of a PostMaster allows the post to be covered by wood so you get the look of a classic wood fence with the added longevity that metal provides. The finished posts are slimmer than a traditional 4”x4” post adding a modern touch to a classic style. We offer a range of wood privacy fence styles, including traditional dog-ear cedar, cap and trim, horizontal privacy, and more! All of these can include a steel post as an alternative as it can adapt to almost every wood fence style.

  Tons of Privacy

If you love having a fence that offers you a lot of privacy, a wood and metal fence is for you! These fences decrease the visibility in and out of your yard, making them a great choice for families, couples, or anyone wanting to have their own uninterrupted space. Wood and metal fence material will also add safety to your property by reducing the risk of theft, vandalism, and outside pests, like rodents.

Have Questions? A strong, durable fence that can withstand harsh weather conditions, wildlife, and livestock is an asset to your business and lifestyle. At Montana Fence, we have many fencing options to fit the needs of local farmers and ranchers and maximize their investment. It can be tricky knowing what type of fence fits your needs best, so to help you choose the best fence materials possible, we’ve outlined the top types of fences for ranches and laid out the specs of why they’re the best for your needs.

Top 4 Fence Materials for Ranch Use

  Barb Wire

Barb wire fence may be one of the most popular for Montana ranchers and farmers. Barb wire is cost-efficient, easy to install, and only requires a small amount of planning and construction. As you know, it is very important to ensure your livestock is safe and secure. Barb wire fence is well-known for keeping livestock protected through its twisted wire design and strategically placed barbs every 5 or 6 inches. This material remains a favorite in our store because of its easy installation, flexibility, and durability in harsh climates. Best of all, it won’t break your bank!

  High Tensile Smooth Wire

High tensile smooth wire is, essentially, barb wire minus the barbs. High tensile smooth wire is an asset to your land because of its strong high carbon steel core. This helps the wire stretch far distances and maintain its durability. High tensile smooth wire is not only strong but cost-efficient, as well. Because the material can stretch, less wire can be used to fence in an area compared to other materials. High tensile wire is a solid choice for keeping livestock and horses fenced in and keep intruders out, especially for large portions of land.

  Non-Climb Horse Fence

Non-climb horse fence is a favorite material with our smaller farm and ranch owners. This fence is a wire material with a 2” x 4” rectangular pattern, and it is often reinforced with wooden or horizontal beams. Our team suggests the non-climb horse fence for smaller pastures specific to horses, goats, sheep, or similar animals. Because the non-climb horse fence is mainly wire, the fence will not rot and doesn’t need to be replaced often. The unique design of the non-climb horse fence also helps prevent horse injuries. Horses are less likely to step through or get caught in this type of fencing material than others. Bonus, non-climb horse fencing’s unique design also helps ensure livestock safety from predators and other animals.

  Treated Wood

Treated wood post and rail is another choice material among ranchers. Treated wood gets the best of both worlds for looks and functionality as it has a complementary aesthetic and is highly durable. Because the wood is treated, it is less likely to rot and is pest resistant. This gives treated wood a longer lifetime, even when it’s up against Montana weather conditions. Many ranchers prefer treated wood for fields or pastures closer to their homes, as treated wood is very pleasing to the eye and flattering to homes and landscapes. It’s important to note that the installation of wood posts is more expensive compared to other materials such as t-posts. We are happy to discuss that factor and provide a free estimate!

Let Us Make Your Decision Easy

We hope this information is helpful for deciding what type of fence fits your ranch best. At Montana Fence, we understand that fence material is important to the success of ranching and agriculture. Our team is here to help make fencing decisions easy and convenient for you.
